The Garage Museum is a unique development which was originally set up in 1990 by the Maitland Automotive Preservation Society (MAPS) in a building provided by the District Council of Yorke Peninsula with the vision of being a Motor Museum and Community Centre.  It is within this unassuming shed that the “Magic? of the Garage is revealed.  The interior is laid out as a u-shaped street with shop frontages with hooded verandahs, street lights, period pumps and old fashioned signage.
Reclaimed materials were used where possible, amongst the items restored and relocated are several old petrol pumps, one of which was found at a rubbish dump.  The verandah roof from the Port Victoria Post Office, another had been stored since 1920.  A desk was recovered from a grain store in Mt Rat and Maitland’s former Community Notice Board complete with notices from the 1960’s and many period trimmings were donated.  Work of a committee with support of the community organisations, traders, volunteers and community service participants committed thousands of working hours over 10 years.“The Garage Museum” was set up for the preservation of motor vehicles and history past and present in the Yorke Peninsula area.  The car club set up “The Garage Museum” as an independent body under it’s own constitution to be managed by a steering committee until fully established.  As the building neared completion it was hired for functions and meetings.  The “Art & Craft Fair” all raising finances when fully established the membership decided that managing the complex would be difficult.  The “Garage Museum” was then looking for a new owner.   It was decided by the management committee the to carry on the good work of the project the best thing to do was to hand it back to the community of Maitland through the newly formed Maitland & District Progress Association.  The Maitland & District Progress Association accepted “The Garage Museum” and the handover of keys occurred at the premises on the 1st December 2002.  The “Garage Museum” is now the well stocked Maitland Markets. The Maitland Markets are run by a group of Volunteers who have a passion for local art and craft and home made produce.  Please call in and have a look at the wonderful work that is for sale.  It’s the ideal place to pick up a gift for someone special and the local produce is delicious, almost as good as the morning and afternoon teas we sell.
