Housed in the former Maitland School and residence, built in 1877, the CYP National Trust Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich past. The Maitland area was originally home to the Narungga people, whose history is thoughtfully documented throughout the museum. European settlement began in 1851 with the arrival of the Rogers family, and a model of their “Ynoo” homestead can be seen in the museum grounds. Following the opening of the area for agricultural selection in 1872, the town was surveyed and settlers moved in, shaping the community we know today. As you wander through the museum, the stories of these early pioneers come to life.
In May 2025, the museum also hosted a “Lost Trades Experience” open day, celebrating traditional skills and crafts and giving visitors a hands-on insight into trades that helped build the region. Plan a visit—you may be surprised by the depth and variety of the displays on offer.

The Yorke Collective is now housed in the former Garage Museum, a unique community project originally established in 1990 by the Maitland Automotive Preservation Society (MAPS). With support from the District Council of Yorke Peninsula, the vision was to create a motor museum and community centre. Inside the shed, the space was designed as a U-shaped street with shopfronts, hooded verandahs, street lights, period fuel pumps and vintage signage, using reclaimed materials from across the region.
Over ten years, a dedicated committee and many volunteers contributed thousands of hours to bring the project to life. As the building neared completion, it was used for community functions, meetings and art and craft fairs to help raise funds. In December 2002, ownership was handed over to the Maitland & District Progress Association so the space could continue to serve the community.
Today the building continues its community role as The Yorke Collective (formerly Maitland Markets), run by a passionate group of volunteers and showcasing local makers, crafts, produce and small businesses from across the Yorke Peninsula. Visitors can browse handmade goods, discover unique gifts and experience a space that celebrates both Maitland’s history and its creative local community.
Men’s Shed
The Maitland Men’s Shed is a welcoming, community-run workshop for anyone interested in woodworking or simply wanting access to quality tools and equipment. For just $2 a day, you can come along, lend a hand and be part of creating a wide range of handcrafted items, including wooden toys, dog kennels, rabbit hutches, toy boxes, rockers and many other beautifully made pieces. You’re also welcome to bring along your own project—just cover the cost of the materials you use.
The Shed is well known for its beautifully crafted wooden toys, which are available for purchase at the Maitland Markets Shed. Custom orders are also welcome. If you have something specific in mind, or would like one of the standard items with a few personal touches, simply have a chat with the team—they’re always happy to work with you to create something just right.
Beyond woodworking, members of the Men’s Shed proudly give back to the community by helping maintain Centennial Park, caring for the overnight stay area and removing feral trees at the town entrances.
